8 ways to reclaim your focus at work

I frequently write about tools to increase productivity in the workplace. However, the most valuable tool of all is perhaps the most overlooked: Your mind. It’s a very complicated tool. Some days, it works great. You have no problems focusing and you’re quite productive. Other days, it feels like your mind is still at home sleeping.

Why does that happen? Perhaps more importantly…How can we fix that?

Over the years, I've found focus is affected by a few different factors. First and foremost, a good night’s sleep is essential. If you have trouble focusing, try going to bed earlier. Second, eating right is important. Your mind functions better when given healthy fuel. Lastly, physical exercise also helps your mind. If possible, getting a little exercise in during lunch or before work is a great way to stay focused at work.

If you want some more ideas, I recently ran across a nice article in openforum.com entitled, “8 ways to reclaim your focus at work.” It lists a bunch of great ideas from a variety of experts.

As always, if you have any ideas, feel free to share them in the comments.

Restricting the reading of email and IM to certain times during the day allows one to focus more as well.
