How to attract and retain the best employees

Does your company have trouble attracting or retaining good employees? If so, Techrepublic offers some "food for thought". What are you doing to keep them? Do you cut back benefits to save a few bucks? Do you create an attractive work environment?

Remember, the talented are always the first to leave because they have options. The unmotivated, unproductive employees will typically stick around because they don’t believe they can do any better. Obviously, you don’t want an office full of unmotivated, unproductive employees. So, how do you attract and retain the best? Here are a few ideas:

Treat your current employees well – Obviously, this goes without saying for employee retention, but it’s also one key to attracting the top talent. Word gets around faster today than ever in the past. For example, everyone knows what Google does for their employees. When a job position opens up at Google, they attract the best, because the best want to work there. Basically, if you provide great perks and a great atmosphere for your employees, the word will get out that your company is a great place to work.

Provide learning opportunities – Do you want employees who don’t care about improving themselves? Of course not. You want those who always want to learn more. Offering, promoting, and paying for training classes or other ways for your employees to better themselves is a great way to attract those who care about bettering themselves (aka: the best).

If you want some more tips, check out this article on techrepublic.com entitled, “5 tips for hiring the best.” I especially like the first point.

How about you? Do you have any tips for hiring or attracting the best employees? I’d love to hear them in the comments.
